Turning Invasive Wattle into Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Aqualibre Africa’s Wattle-to-SAF initiative converts invasive wattle — responsible for degrading over 2% of South Africa’s land — into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and mandatory CORSIA carbon credits.

Working with the Community Work Programme (CWP) under COGTA, the project tackles clean skies, land restoration, and rural employment. Local workers harvest wattle, which is gasified into syngas and refined into aviation-grade fuel.

Each tonne of SAF represents measurable carbon reductions, producing tradable, insured carbon credits that fund wages, training, and land rehabilitation — creating a circular “climate prosperity” model.

By connecting community labour, government support, and private investment, AQLA proves that climate action can be profitable, scalable, and inclusive, advancing South Africa’s Just Energy Transition and aviation decarbonisation.
